Zelda live-action film now stars: Nintendo reveals the new Link and Zelda
After years of speculation, leaks, and fan theories, Nintendo has officially announced the lead actors for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. The long-awaited adaptation finally has faces: Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will take on the role of Link, the Hero of Time.
The news came via a message from Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary game designer behind the franchise: “This is Miyamoto. The live-action Legend of Zelda movie will star Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. I’m really looking forward to seeing them both. The theatrical release is scheduled for May 7, 2027. Please wait a little longer.”
A bet on young talent
The casting choice has surprised many, as both actors are rising stars rather than household names. Nintendo seems to have prioritized authenticity and character alignment over celebrity appeal—a decision that aligns with the company’s philosophy.
Bragason brings an ethereal yet powerful presence to Zelda, while Ainsworth—recognized for roles in The Haunting of Bly Manor—offers a fresh perspective on Link, the silent hero who has captivated millions.
This move also ensures that audiences focus on the story and world of Hyrule, rather than being distracted by the fame of the actors.
A top-tier production team
The film will be directed by Wes Ball, known for his work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the Maze Runner trilogy. His background in action and special effects makes him an ideal choice to translate Zelda’s epic scale into cinematic language.
Backing the project are Sony Pictures and producer Avi Arad, the mastermind behind film adaptations of Spider-Man, Iron Man, and more. With such a team, fans can expect a film that respects the source material while delivering a high-quality cinematic experience.

What to expect from the film
While the plot remains under wraps, speculation suggests it will be an origin story, possibly blending classic elements from the games with new cinematic twists.
Familiar characters like Ganondorf and Impa may appear, along with races such as the Zora, Goron, and Gerudo. The visual representation of Hyrule will be crucial, with fans hoping for inspiration from Breath of the Wild or Twilight Princess.
Zelda by the numbers: a legendary franchise
Since its debut in 1986, The Legend of Zelda has sold over 140 million copies worldwide. It stands as one of Nintendo’s most beloved and influential franchises. With each new release, the series has redefined what video games can achieve in terms of design, exploration, and emotion.
Nintendo’s recent success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which surpassed $1 billion at the box office, sets a high bar. But Zelda brings a deeper emotional and narrative layer that could resonate even more profoundly with audiences.
The challenge of adapting a classic
Turning Zelda into a live-action film is no easy feat. The creative team must strike a balance between epic adventure, magical fantasy, and emotional depth. One of the biggest challenges will be giving Link a voice, without alienating longtime fans.
If executed well, this adaptation could become a turning point for video game movies—a true cinematic quest worthy of the Triforce legacy.
