Supercell: The mobile empire that cancels more games than it launches
If you've ever played games on your phone, you’ve surely heard of Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, or Brawl Stars. These titles were created by Supercell, a Finnish powerhouse that has dominated mobile gaming with a model based on only releasing games that can become global blockbusters.
What many don’t know is that for every global hit, Supercell has quietly canceled several other games. The company sets incredibly high standards and has no problem pulling the plug on a project that doesn't meet its expectations, even if millions were invested in development.
Since its founding in 2010, Supercell has internally built over 20 mobile games, but only a handful have reached global release. Most projects are soft-launched in select countries, and based on metrics like retention and revenue, Supercell decides whether to continue or shut them down.
A list longer than you think
Some of the canceled titles include Clash Mini, Everdale, and Rush Wars. These games never made it beyond their testing phases. In contrast, the few games that did make it to global launch became major successes:
- Clash of Clans (2012): Still active, with over $5 billion in revenue.
- Clash Royale (2016): Generated more than $2 billion.
- Brawl Stars (2018): Also over $2 billion earned.
- Hay Day (2012): Has reached $1 billion in lifetime earnings.
By comparison, canceled games like Clash Mini or Everdale barely reached $2 million.

A philosophy rooted in excellence
Supercell’s philosophy is clear: only global success is good enough. Public announcements have even stated that “a few million dollars isn’t enough” without a massive user base to back it up.
While this may seem ruthless, it’s what allows Supercell to maintain the highest quality in mobile gaming. Their games consistently dominate the charts for years because they only release the very best.
What’s next for mo.co and Squad Busters?
After years without new titles, Supercell has finally introduced two new games:
- mo.co, an ARPG focused on monster hunting, currently invite-only.
- Squad Busters, a multiplayer experience that launched globally in 2024.
These games passed Supercell’s strict testing process, which already puts them ahead of dozens of other projects. Whether they will become the next Clash Royale or Brawl Stars remains to be seen, but their launch is a strong start.
